This is a list of United States states by elevation.1

The elevation of a U.S. state may be described in a number of ways:

  • States can be compared by their highest points: Alaska would be the highest state, due to Mount McKinley at 20,320 ft (6,194 m), while Florida is the least high, at 345 ft (105 m).
  • States can be compared by their lowest points, which yields a different result: Colorado has the highest low point, at 3,315 ft (1,010 m), due to the uplift of the Great Plains caused by the orogeny of the Rocky Mountains. Two states extend below sea level: Louisiana and California. California contains the lowest point in the U.S. (Badwater in Death Valley at 282 ft (86 m) below sea level).
  • States can be compared by their average points, which is another indication of their ruggedness. By this measure, Colorado is still the highest (6,800 ft (2,073 m)), while Delaware is the state with the lowest mean elevation (60 ft (18 m)).
  • The difference from the highest to lowest point can also be an indication of ruggedness: given that most states lowest elevation is sea level, Alaska and Florida are the extreme states along this axis.
  • Finally, the topographic prominence of the high point of a state indicates how prominent the high point is. If the peak's prominence is P feet, to get from the summit to any higher terrain one must descend at least P feet. Mount McKinley has the highest prominence of any state high point. Two state high points have zero prominence (e.g., Oklahoma and Connecticut: their high point lie on their boundaries).

In the list below, the elevations listed are in the NGVD29 vertical datum, unless otherwise noted. This is an out-of-date datum: elevations in the more up-to-date NAVD88 vertical datum can be individually accessed at the National Geodetic Survey web site.2
